C-USA Swimming & Diving Championship
In Brief: Freshman Arielle Hayon set a Conference USA record and she joined teammates Marta Cano-Minarro and Zoe Spitz at the top of the podium as conference champions to highlight a productive night for the Owls at the C-USA Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday.
The Details: Hayon opened the golden night for the Owls by shaving more than a second off her career-best effort in morning qualifying to win the 100 fly in 51.82, .16 better than former Owl Casey Clark's conference and school record set in 2015. Teammate Madison Howe, who had won the previous two conference titles was fourth one spot ahead of Becca Evans. Cano-Minarro returned to the form that saw her share C-USA Swimmer of the Year in 2020 by taking control midway through the 200 freestyle and cruising to the win. Lauren McDougall was her closest pursuer and joined her on the podium while Virginie Qian was fifth. Elizabeth Myers dropped more than a second on her prelim time to win the B final with the seventh-fastest time of the meet. Spitz, who was named to the conference all-academic team earlier in the week, ran down FIU's Micheala Trnkova to capture her first conference crown in 53.79, the second-fastest time in school history. Friday night's action opened with freshman Amelia Kane swim the third-fastest 400 IM in school history (4:17.13) on her way to a silver medal to add to her gold in the 500 free from Thursday night.
The Standings: (through seven events) 1. FIU 733, 2. Rice 650, 3. Marshall 389, 4. FAU 380, North Texas 372, 6. ODU 252
Seth Huston:" We brought out the heavy artillery tonight. CUSA Champions, Arielle and Marta dominated the field. They swam their own race and just put it all together. Zoe Spitz, came from behind and won her first CUSA title. Zoe has had so many obstacles this year, this was special to see her achieve this accomplishment."
Up Next: Five individual titles as well one relay will be decided on Saturday in the final day of the competition. The first final of the day will be the 1,650 freestyle, and event Rice has won eight times previously Prelims for each event begin at 9:30 a.m. (central) while the race for the final set of gold medals is set for 5 p.m.
