Rice Opens season strong at Seminole Fall Classic

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Rice swimming and diving teams opened the season in second place after the first day of the Seminole Fall Classic on Friday.
The Owls finished day one with 130 points, trailing host Florida State's A team, which leads the meet with 175 points. West Virginia sits in third with 101.5 points.
"A pretty solid start to the season," head coach Seth Huston said. "Impressive performances by our freshmen. Looking forward to seeing how we bounce back on Saturday."
Ava Portello earned Rice's first win of the meet in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 1:48.01. Ava Hamblett placed eighth in the event with a time of 1:52.23.
Freshman Lily Archibald captured her first individual collegiate victory in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.65. Jessica Lawton added a fifth-place finish in the event at 55.56.
Bella Zhang claimed the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 56.57, followed closely by Reese Cole, who finished second in 58.00.
Rice also took third in the 200-yard medley relay, as Hamblett, Cole, Lawton and Portello combined for a time of 1:42.16.
Zhang added a third-place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke (29.27), while Siiri Einio followed in fifth (29.57).
In the 400-yard individual medley, Cole placed second with a time of 4:22.19, and Lily Cramer finished fourth in 4:25.55.
In diving, Morgan Robson finished fourth in the 3-meter competition with a score of 240.20. Antonina Harned was fifth with 237.45.
The Owls return to the pool Saturday to wrap up competition at the Seminole Fall Classic.
