Owls Host Mean Green in Rematch
Just two days after suffering a 57-50 road loss to the North Texas Mean Green, the two teams will meet again on Sunday in a West Division showdown at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice (7-10, 2-7) is 5-5 at home this season while the Mean Green (11-10, 5-6) hold a 2-6 record on the road. North Texas will then travel to Houston on Feb. 13 for a Super Bowl Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Owls nearly erased a 14-point deficit but ultimately fell just short in a 57-50 road loss at North Texas Thursday evening at The Super Pit. Rice used a big push late to pull to within 51-48 with 1:35 remaining but North Texas was able to get timely stops down the stretch to hold on for their third straight victory. Malia Fisher, the reigning C-USA Freshman of the Week, picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points (6-of-9, 1-of-1) and 10 rebounds.
Fisher Freshman of the Week
Fisher secured her second C-USA Freshman of the Week award of the season, the league office announced on Monday (2/7). The Dacula, Ga. native scored a season-high 20 points at UTEP on 50 percent (7-of-14) shooting from the field and a 6-of-6 performance at the free throw line to go along with seven rebounds, a season-high tying five assists and two steals all while playing the entire 40 minutes of Rice's 72-69 win over the Miners. Fisher is averaging 10.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, and 1.5 steals in 32 minutes per game in her first season as an Owl and has now scored in double-figures in six consecutive games and seven of her last eight. She became the fourth player in program history to win multiple C-USA Freshman of the Week honors in a season.
Bokunewicz Letting it Fly
Redshirt freshman Maya Bokunewicz leads the Owls with 38 made three-pointers this season in her first full collegiate season. The State College, Pa. native is first in C-USA in three-point percentage (36.5) and third in three-point field goals per game (2.2). Bokunewicz made a Rice season-high five three-pointers in their road victory at UTEP.
