Fisher leads the way with 14 points in 55-42 loss
HOUSTON – The North Texas Mean Green handed the Rice Owls women's basketball their second defeat in the past three days with a 55-42 decision Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Rice (7-11, 2-8) was held to a season-low in points as they shot just 33 percent from the field for the game and were outscored by North Texas (12-10, 6-6) by a 36-22 disparity in points in the paint.
Freshman forward Malia Fisher led the Owls with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and a 3-of-6 performance at the free throw line to go along with a team-high eight rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Fisher has now scored in double-figure in seven consecutive games and came up just shy of her sixth double-double of the season.
Also scoring in double-figures for the Owls was sophomore forward Ashlee Austin, who added 10 points in 32 minutes.
North Texas led by as much as 27 points in the second half but Rice closed strong to trim the deficit down to 13 points in the final quarter. The Mean Green was led in scoring by Quincy Noble, who led all scorers with 16 points.
Postgame Reaction - Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds
"Just unfortunately two games in a row where we've struggled to put the ball in the basket. We did do some positive things today that I thought we improved upon from Thursday, and we held them to only 55 points. We only had two players in double-figures and scored 42 points so you're not going to win many games that way. We're going to take tomorrow completely off and regroup and hopefully be more energized for a tough swing that we have coming up."
