Owls Continue Homestand, Host Blazers
The Rice Owls will look to get back in the win column this Thursday when they continue their three-game homestand by hosting the UAB Blazers from Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice (7-11, 2-8) suffered a pair of losses to North Texas last week and is currently in sixth place in the C-USA West division. UAB (13-9, 6-5) has lost three of their last four contests, including an 81-75 home loss to Old Dominion on Sunday. This will be the first of two games between these two teams in the next five days with a makeup game slated for Monday, Feb. 21 in Birmingham.
Scouting UAB
Senior center Zakyia Weathersby (6'2") leads the charge for the Blazers, ranking seventh in the NCAA in double-doubles (16). Weathersby is averaging 14.6 points and 11.0 rebounds (18th in NCAA) per game and leads all C-USA players in field goal percentage (56.0-20th NCAA).
Last Time Out
The North Texas Mean Green handed the Owls their second defeat of the week with a 55-42 decision last Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice was held to a season-low in points as they shot just 33 percent from the field for the game and were outscored by a 36-22 disparity in points in the paint. North Texas led by as much as 27 points in the second half but Rice closed strong to trim the deficit down to 13 points in the final quarter.
Youth is Served
Freshman forward Malia Fisher (11.3 ppg) and redshirt freshman guard Maya Bokunewicz (11.3 ppg) are second and third, respectively, on the Owls in scoring during Conference USA play. Fisher, who has scored in double-figures in seven consecutive games, ranks in the Top-15 in C-USA action in rebounding (6.7-10th), steals (1.7-14th), blocks (0.9-13th), offensive rebounds (2.3-13th), and defensive rebounds (4.4-11th). In league play Bokunewicz is ranked second in C-USA in both three-point percentage (.338) and three-pointers made per game (2.50). She also ranks second in minutes played per game (38.5), just one year removed from tearing her ACL.
Guarding the Arc
Rice ranks 26th in the NCAA in three-point field goal defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 26.8 percent from deep. The Owls have allowed only two opponents to shoot 35 percent or higher in a game from three-point territory this season and have held 13 opponents to below a 30 percent clip.
Schedule Crunch
Beginning on Thursday the Owls start a stretch of playing five games in 10 days in four different cities. Rice will play three road games next week on a trip that will last seven whole days.
Approaching Frisco
The Owls are less than three weeks away (Mar. 8-12) from the C-USA Championship tournament, which will once again take place at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco. All 14 teams will participate in the single-elimination Conference Championship. Teams will be seeded 1-7 in their respective divisions and compete in a cross-divisional bracket based on regular season standings. The winner will gain the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
