Rice falls on road, 57-50
DENTON, Texas – The Rice Owls women's basketball team nearly erased a 14-point deficit but ultimately fell just short in a 57-50 road loss at North Texas Thursday evening at The Super Pit.
Rice (7-10, 2-7) used a big push late to pull to within 51-48 with 1:35 remaining but North Texas (11-10, 5-6) was able to get timely stops down the stretch to hold on for their third straight victory.
Malia Fisher, the reigning C-USA Freshman of the Week, picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points (6-of-9, 1-of-1) and 10 rebounds and has now scored in double-figures in six consecutive games. Fellow teammates Maya Bokunewicz (5-of-9) and Ashlee Austin (5-of-11) also totaled 14 points apiece. Bokunewicz went 3-of-7 from beyond the arc and has now made three of three-pointers in a game seven times.
The Owls were undone by a season-high tying 26 turnovers, which resulted in 26 points for the Mean Green. North Texas also held a 24-1 advantage in bench scoring.
Postgame Reaction - Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds
"Tonight we didn't take care of the basketball and we didn't box out. I feel like these are two areas we can control and be better in. But to still have a shot at the game late in the fourth says a lot about our fight and toughness. We will continue to work on those parts of our game and do our best to clean them up before our rematch against them on Sunday."
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Owls got out to a slow start, getting outscored 13-4 in the opening 10 minutes as they shot just 1-of-12 from the field and turned the ball over eight times, resulting in 10 of the Mean Green's 13 points.
Second Quarter
North Texas outscored the Owls 19-14 in period despite seven points from Fisher as the Mean Green shot 7-of-14 from the field.
Third Quarter
Rice went on an 11-3 run to open the quarter, which included an old-fashioned three-point play from Bokunewicz, followed by a long distance make from Fisher to pull the Owls to within 34-30. However, North Texas answered back with an 11-2 run over the final 6:35 to take a 45-32 lead to the fourth.
