HOUSTON — Coming off one of their most successful fall seasons in recent history, Rice announced on Wednesday a new 15-year agreement with Westwood Golf Club. The agreement solidifies Westwood as the home of Rice University Golf.
"We are thrilled to call Westwood Golf Club our home for the next 15 years," said Rice Head Coach Justin Emil. "Our team can effectively improve their game all while playing one of the best courses in Texas on a regular basis. The facility will not only help our players develop their games, but also close the gap in attracting top student-athletes to come and join our team in our quest for a National Championship. The vision of a wonderful home course that is close to campus and a facility for the team has been a dream of mine for our program. I can't thank all of our generous donors enough for making this dream a reality and for giving our student-athletes what they need to go win championships both in the classroom and on the course."
As part of the new 15-year agreement, Rice will co-invest in a new, state-of-the-art teaching facility at the club. The 2,600 square-foot facility will feature 3 hitting bays, one of which will be designated primarily for Rice. The indoor/outdoor hitting bay will be equipped with the latest technology for the team to video their swing as well as measure the force they produce from the ground up with Swing Catalyst, analyze their putting stroke with the Sam Putt Lab system, and evaluate ball flight and swing data with TrackMan. The facility will also include a dedicated meeting room for Rice.
Rice's investment in the project was made possible thanks to the generous contributions of over 25 donors.
"Westwood is excited to be the long-term home of Rice Golf and we're very grateful for Rice University's commitment to the ongoing success of Westwood Golf Club," said Paul Soanes, President of Westwood Golf Club.
Westwood Golf Club, originally founded in 1928 as Westwood Country Club, has the distinction of being the second oldest Private Golf Club in Houston on its original site. The Club was founded by thirty prominent families with the desire to promote the spirit of brotherhood among its members by supporting and maintaining a private club for the promotion of outdoor life.
