Race to qualify for the NCAA Championhship begins at 8:30
HOUSTON – The Rice Women's Cross Country team will be heading to College Station for the second time this season on Friday for the NCAA South Central Regional, hosted by Texas A&M's Watts Cross Country Course. Race time has been moved up to 8:30 a.m. due to anticipated bad weather later in the morning.
The Owls last competed on the 29th of October, when they finished 3rd at the Conference-USA Championships in Denton, Texas. Senior Caitlin Wosika, junior Taigen Hunter-Galvan, and senior Alyssa Balandran earned all-conference accolades, finishing in the top 15.
Rice currently ranks eighth in the South Central Region of the most recent USTFCCCA poll.
"Our practices since conference have gone well and we have recovered to face the best in our region," says Coach Bevan. "We are currently ranked eighth in the region, but I feel like we can improve on our ranking and our most recent performance and the A&M course four weeks ago. We know the course and we have a history of performing well at the end of the season."
The top two teams at the regional will earn automatic berths at the 2022 NCAA D1 Cross Country Championships will be held in Stillwater, Oklahoma on November 19 along with 13 additional teams who will qualify as at-large entries. In addition, the top four individual finishers who are not from an automatic or at-larger team qualifier, also earn a trip to the national championship.
