Owls Open C-USA Play
For the first time in 22 days, the Rice Owls women's basketball team will return to action this weekend when they begin Conference USA action with a pair of road contests, beginning Jan. 6 at Middle Tennessee in a rematch of last year's C-USA Championship. The Owls have had their previous three scheduled games either canceled or postponed due to COVID-19 protocols, having last played Dec. 16 with a 74-64 win at Sam Houston. Middle Tennessee leads the all-time series with the Owls, 7-4. Rice will then travel to UAB on Saturday, Jan. 8 for a 1 p.m. contest against the Blazers.
Scouting Middle Tennessee
The Lady Raiders split their C-USA opening weekend slate of games, defeating the Roadrunners of UTSA 85-56 in San Antonio before dropping a 56-55 contest at UTEP. Middle Tennessee is 4-0 at home this season. The Lady Raiders rank fifth in the NCAA in three-point field goals made per game (10.3) and are second in the country in three-point field goals attempted (403). On the flip side, Middle Tennessee ranks third in the NCAA in three-point field goal defense (21.9%). Four different Lady Raiders are averaging double-figures in scoring, led by Dor Saar (12.9 ppg).

The Blazers also split their first two C-USA contests, defeating UTEP 76-74 in El Paso before losing 68-60 at UTSA. Senior center Zakyia Weathersby leads the way for the Blazers, ranking second in the NCAA with nine double-doubles. Weathersby is averaging a team-best 16.4 points per game to go along with 11.6 rebounds per contest.
Last Time Out
Behind a career-high 30 points from sophomore forward Ashlee Austin, the Owls secured their second straight victory with their first road win of the season, defeating the Sam Houston Bearkats 74-64 on Dec. 16 in Huntsville. The Owls outscored the Bearkats by a margin of 52-33 in the second half and did much of their damage at the free throw line, making a season-high 25 free throws on 30 attempts (83%) while also establishing a season-high in blocked shots with nine.
Jackson Dishing the Rock
Sophomore point guard Destiny Jackson now leads all of C-USA in assists per game (5.1), a mark that ranks 39th in the NCAA. Jackson has dished out six or more assists in four of her seven games and has also scored in double-figures in three consecutive games.
Austin Powering Owls
Sophomore forward Ashlee Austin is having a career season thus far, her third with the Owls. The Johns Creek, Ga. native has scored in double-figures in each of Rice's eight contests and is averaging a team-best 18.1 points (3rd in C-USA) on 53.9 percent shooting (4th in C-USA), along with 7.5 rebounds per game (11th in C-USA), all of which are career-highs.
