Schmidt's 200th career dual win
In Brief: Freshmen Allison Zipoli and Saara Orav combined for a clinching win in doubles and swept to singles wins in their collegiate dual debuts to lead Rice to a 6-1 win over Lamar and present Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt her 200th career victory.
Doubles: Rice jumped out strongly by racing to the doubles point, dropping just one game at the second and third lines. Oraav and Zipoli clinched the first point of the season with a 6-1 win over the Cardinals Elena Rodriguez and Alba Perez.
Singles: Maria Budin did not drop a game at the fourth line to increase the Owls lead to 2-0 and Zipoli followed quickly, dropping only one game in two sets at the second line to push the lead to 3-0. Orav delivered the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the fifth line. Anastasia Smirnova and Anna Bowtell closed out the scoring for Rice with wins at the first and third lines.
Elizabeth Schmidt: (on today's match) "We were itching to get out there because we had to wait a few extra days for our first match. We have some things to work on before the Kickoff Weekend, but it was a good way to start. They (Orav and Zipoli) came out with a lot of energy and quality play and took care of business. It was good to see Maria and Anna back on the court after battling some injuries in the fall. This was their first match back in a while and knock some of the rust off and Nastia (Smirnova) played a solid match at one."
(on reaching 200 dual wins) "I'm very grateful for every single person who has been a part of those wins. The Rice women's tennis family is a special one and I am proud of the many wonderful student-athletes, assistant coaches, and support staff who have worked very hard and put their whole heart into getting those wins. Now let's go get some more!"
Up Next: The Owls will travel to Austin to participate in the Austin Regional of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Rice will take on SMU at 2 p.m. while Texas will meet FAU in the opening match at 11 a.m. The winners will meet on Saturday at 2 p.m. looking (to advance to the National Indoor Championship while the losers will meet in a consolation match, also at 2 p.m.
