Fokam, Forbes, McNaney, Simpson-Sullivan to compete on national stage
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls men's and women's Track and Field programs will put the finishing touches on the 2021 Outdoor campaign this week when they send a total of four athletes to Eugene, Oregon to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
On Wednesday, James McNaney will represent the men's team when he competes in flight two of the javelin at 8:15 p.m. (CT). McNaney punched his ticket to his first career NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a sixth place qualifying throw (66.90m/219-6) at the NCAA West Prelims and holds a season-best mark of 71.41m (234-3). The Longview, Texas native is seeded 22nd in the NCAA.
Then on Thursday the women's team will have two competitors, starting with freshman Tara Simpson-Sullivan in the hammer throw at 3 p.m. (CT). The native of Penrith, England placed sixth in the hammer throw at the NCAA West Prelims with a mark of 64.87m (212-10). Simpson-Sullivan set a Conference USA Championship record with a winning toss of 66.01m (216-7) in the hammer throw, a record that stood for 17 years. She is seeded fifth overall in the NCAA's entering this week.
Freshman distance runner Grace Forbes will be attempting to earn All-American status at three different NCAA meets this semester when she races in the 10,000m at 8:08 p.m. (CT) on ESPN2 Thursday evening. Forbes, who earned All-American honors at both the NCAA Indoor Championships and NCAA Cross Country Championships this spring, used one final burst on the final lap of the 10,000m at the NCAA West Prelims to surpass Oregon's Carmela Cardama Baez to win by almost two seconds with a time of 33:28.47. The reigning Conference USA Performer of the Meet, Forbes has won all six races she's competed in this outdoor season. Forbes will now have an opportunity, along with NC State's Kelsey Chmiel, to earn All-American honors in the NCAA Outdoor 10k, the NCAA Indoor 5000m, and the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Forbes is seeded second in the nation in the 10,000m.
Closing out the week for the Owls will be the All-American jumper Michelle Fokam, who is seeded 10th in the triple jump (13.60m) and will be making her third appearance in Eugene. Fokam will compete on Saturday at 5:20 p.m. (CT) on ESPN3 and qualified for the NCAA Championships with a clutch fifth-place leap of 13.58m (44-6.75) on the final attempt of the triple jump at NCAA West Prelims.
