McNaney Places 20th at NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Oregon - Rice senior thrower James McNaney put the finishing touches on a storybook season by placing 20th overall in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Championships Wednesday evening at Hayward Stadium.
McNaney, who was ranked 22nd in the nation entering the meet, posted a three-throw series of 63.56m (208-6), foul, 63.96m (209-10) on the nation's biggest stage.
It was a banner 2021 season for the Longview, Texas native, who completed the transition from pole vaulter to javelin thrower in spectacular fashion. McNaney earned a sixth place result (66.90m) at the NCAA West Prelims to qualify for his first-ever NCAA Championships.
In mid-May, McNaney recorded a dramatic lifetime best throw of 71.41m (234-3) on his final attempt to place second at the Conference USA Championships, a mark that ranks second in school history. In total, McNaney notched seven top-three finishes during the outdoor season, including a pair of victories.
