BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Blake Brogdon struck out four and scattered five hits over seven shutout innings to lead Rice to a 7-0 victory in Game Two Saturday at Young Memorial Field. The Owls fell in the opener, 2-1.
In the nightcap, Rice scored in the opening inning for the third straight game in the series. Edwards reached on an error and advance to second after the third baseman threw the ball away. Comeaux then brought him in with a single to left field. Bradley Gneiting then doubled to right center field to score Comeaux.
The Owls doubled their lead in the second inning. With one out, Edwards, Comeaux and Gneiting hit back-to-back singles to score a run. Austin Bulman then walked to load the bases, and Will Karp drew a walk to score Comeaux.
The game stayed that way until the fifth inning, when Nathan Becker hammered a home run onto the street past right field. Becker came through again in the sixth inning. With one out, Bulman walked. Two batters later, Becker laced a single into left field, scoring Bulman.
Rice added another run in the seventh. Hal Hughes was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Justin Long walked. Two batters later, Comeaux grounded to the first baseman, but he couldn't handle it, allowing Comeaux to reach and Hughes to score the final run.
In the first game, Rice wasted no time getting on the board. Cade Edwards led off with a four-pitch walk and Braden Comeaux singled to right field. After they stole third and second, respectively, Austin Bulman's sacrifice fly brought in Edwards for the game's opening run.
UAB tied the game in the third inning when Blaine Smith's leadoff double dropped between Bradley Gneiting, Guy Garibay and Will Karp. Karp's throw back into the infield got away and rolled into the UAB dugout, allowing Smith to come around and score.
The Owls had plenty of chances to take the lead, getting runners on base in every inning, including loading the bases in both the fourth and sixth innings. But Rice couldn't bring one across, leaving 11 men on base.
UAB grabbed the win in the bottom of the seventh inning, as they started the inning with three straight singles to bring the winning run across.

Rice improved to 20-27-1 overall and 8-18-1 in Conference USA. UAB dropped to 16-32 overall and 9-18 in C-USA.
