Rice Takes Series Opener at UAB, 6-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Rice baseball team pounded out 15 hits and Mitchell Holcomb and Brandon Deskins combined to hold UAB to just four singles on its way to a 6-1 series-opening victory Friday night at Young Memorial Field.
Rice wasted no time getting on the board, scoring just two batters in to the game. Cade Edwards led off the game lacing a double down the left field line. Braden Comeaux then sent a single through the right side to bring in Edwards with the first run of the game.
Will Karp led off the second inning with a walk and stole second. Two batters later, Hal Hughes singled to center field, scoring Karp with Rice's second run of the game.
UAB cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second. But with one out in the top of the fourth, Justin Long singled down the right field line. Edwards then drilled his ninth home run over the left field wall to increase Rice's lead to 4-1.
Two innings later, the Owls used a two-out rally to add another run. With Long on first, Comeaux singled to center field. Bradley Gneiting then singled through the left side to bring in Long.
Rice added its final run when Austin Bulman led off the ninth with his sixth home run of the year.
Mitchell Holcomb went seven strong innings for the Owls, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out eight. Brandon Deskins went the final two innings, striking out two.
For the record
Rice improved to 19-26-1 overall and 7-17-1 in Conference USA. UAB dropped to 15-31 overall and 8-17 in C-USA.
