Hicks places 17th in discus
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Rice Owls men's track & field team was well-represented Friday at the NCAA West Prelims with three competitors in action and concluding their respective seasons at E.B. Cushing Stadium.
Sophomore thrower Nick Hicks, who placed 30th in the hammer throw on Wednesday, concluded a T&F season in which he won a pair of C-USA Championships by placing 17th overall (55.32m/181-6) in the discus on Friday. Hicks entered the meet seeded 20th in the event.
Also competing in the discus was freshman Samuel Woodley, who capped a sensational outdoor debut season with a 22nd place result (54.72m/179-6). Woodley won six discus competitions this season.
Freshman Ese Amata placed 39th overall in the high jump, clearing 2.06m (6-9.00) while getting his first postseason experience. Amata wrapped up a season in which he posted eight top-three finishes.
The 3000m steeplechase featuring Rice's Andrew Abikhaled and Hociel Landa was pushed to Saturday due to inclement weather that postponed much of the evening's events.
Junior James McNaney already punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships in the javelin with a sixth place finish (66.90m) on Wednesday and will compete in Eugene, Oregon on Wednesday, June 9 at 8:15 p.m. (CT).
