HOUSTON, Texas — The Rice baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision to No. 22 Southern Miss, Saturday afternoon Reckling Park.
The game was delayed an hour and a half due to expected thunderstorms. Once the game began, Roel Garcia started strong, retiring the first six batters he faced. However, Southern Miss struck for three runs in the third inning to get on the board first. Rice threatened in the bottom half. Hal Hughes and Justin Dunlap both walked to put two runners on with no outs. However, Cade Edwards and Braden Comeaux struck out and Bradley Gneiting popped up to second to end the threat.
USM added two more in the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, Nathan Becker was hit in his foot leading off the inning. Three batters later, Edwards singled to third, putting runners on first and second. But Comeaux flied out to left field to end the inning.
The Golden Eagles added two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth. Rice got on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Edwards and Johnny Hoyle led off with singles. After Gneiting reached on a fielder's choice, Austin Bulman grounded to second, scoring Edwards for the Owls only run.
