HOUSTON, Texas — Rice used a strong pitching performance from Mitchell Holcomb and Brandon Deskins to shut out Southern Miss, 6-0, in the first game of a doubleheader before dropping the nightcap, Friday at Reckling Park.
In game one, Rice struck first in the opening frame. Cade Edwards and Braden Comeaux led off with singles. After Comeaux was picked off, Bradley Gneiting singled to bring in Edwards and Austin Bulman walked. Two batters later, Will Karp singled, bringing in Bulman as Rice jumped in front, 2-0.
Southern Miss threatened in the third. Dustin Dickerson led off with a single. Two batters later, Reed Trimble reached when Edwards couldn't handle his ground ball and Charlie Fischer walked to load the bases. But Mitchell Holcomb struck out Christopher Sargent and Reece Ewing to get out of the inning.
Rice added on in the fifth. With one out, Bradley Gneiting hit his seventh home run of the year over the right field wall. Bulman then reached on an error and Guy Garibay singled down the right field line, knocking out the USM starter, Hunter Stanley. After Garibay was caught stealing, Karp walked. Karp then took off for second and when the catcher threw down, Bulman scored from third. Nathan Becker drove in Karp with a double to left center.
Rice added another in the sixth. Justin Dunlap drew a leadoff walk and Edwards hit his second triple of the year to drive him in.
Mitchell Holcomb improved to 5-4 on the year. Brandon Deskins earned his first career save.
In the second game, Southern Miss wasted no time getting on the board with Trimble's home run. Trimble added a two-run double in the second as USM scored four times before adding two more in the third.
Rice threatened in the bottom of the third. With one out, Edwards, Comeaux and Gneiting all singled to load the bases. However, Bulman and Garibay struck out to end the threat.
Southern Miss added one run in the fifth inning, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. The Owls got on the board in the bottom of the seventh.
