Hicks, Gunnarsdottir and Forbes ready to represent Owls
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls men's and women's Track and Field programs will put the finishing touches on the 2021 Indoor campaign this Thursday/Friday when they send a total of three athletes to Fayetteville, Ark. to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
On Thursday, Nick Hicks will represent the men's team when he competes in the hammer throw at 6:30 p.m. as the field's first competitor. Hicks is seeded 10th out of 16 after breaking his own school record with a mark of 22.21m (72-10.5) at the H-Town SpeedCity Series. He also won the C-USA Indoor title in the same event with a then school record throw of 21.30m. Thursday will be Hicks' NCAA Championships debut.
Then on Friday the women's team will have two competitors, starting with thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir in the shot put at 11 a.m. Gunnarsdottir will be the 14th competitor and is seeded 11th after a monster C-USA winning throw of 16.95m (55-7.5) Gunnarsdottir set a new Icelandic record with that mark and will now be competing at her first NCAA Championships.
Closing out the day for the Owls will be the All-American distance runner Grace Forbes, who is seeded 10th in the 5000m (15:50.38) and will be making her NCAA Indoor debut after last year's championships were canceled. Forbes actually qualified in three different events; the 5000m, 3000m and mile but will also be competing just a few days later at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and thus stuck with the 5k. Forbes was the C-USA Track Performer of the Meet and High Point Scorer after winning both the 3000m, mile, and ran anchor on the distance medley relay team.
