Rice connects on season-high 14 three-pointers
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women's basketball connected on a season-high 14 made three-pointers to defeat the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters, 73-50 Friday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Four different Owls made three or more three-pointers in the bounce back victory as Rice knocked down 14-of-25 (58.3%) from beyond the arc, who also set a season-high in three-point attempts.
Rice (14-2, 10-1) outscored LA Tech (13-9, 8-8) by a margin of 42-24 in the second half and placed four different players in double-figure scoring. Junior guard Jasmine Smith scored a game-high 16 points, 11 of which came in the second half, which included a season-high four made three-pointers. She also contributed four assists and five rebounds in 27 minutes.
Senior center Nancy Mulkey picked up her fourth double-double of the year with 13 points and a season-high 14 rebounds while sophomore guard Katelyn Crosthwait scored 13 points and knocked down a trio of three-pointers. Sophomore wing Lauren Schwartz went 3-of-6 from deep and was the fourth Owl in double-digit scoring with 11 points. Sophomore forward India Bellamy just missed becoming the fifth Owl with 10 or more points, adding a season-high nine points on a career-high three made trifectas.
The Owls defensively held the Lady Techsters to just 31 percent shooting from the field and won the bench scoring battle, 17-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Rice outscored Tech 16-10 in the quarter, capped by a 5-0 run in the final 38 seconds. The Owls shot 54 percent from the field in the period and held the Lady Techsters to 3-of-15 shooting (20 percent). Crosthwait started the game off on fire by scoring seven points and making all three of her shot attempts, including a three-pointer. Mulkey grabbed six rebounds in nine minutes of action and also contributed four points.
Second Quarter
Tech won the next 10 minutes, 16-15, but the Owls still held a 31-26 at the half. Crosthwait knocked down a pair of triples in the quarter and Smith added another while Mulkey contributed four more points and five rebounds.
Third Quarter
The Owls were able to stretch their lead to double-figures in the second half with a 22-15 advantage in the third period. Smith and Schwartz each scored eight points apiece and Bellamy added six more points on a pair of long distance makes. Smith gave the Owls all the momentum heading to fourth when she knocked down a half-court heave as the quarter expired to make the score 53-41.
Fourth Quarter
Rice put the game further out of reach in the fourth with a 20-9 scoring disparity, connecting from deep three more times in the process. Six different Owls registered points in the quarter and the Rice defense held Tech scoreless over the final 4:53 of the game.
