Owls Continue Winning Ways at Home, Defeat LT 64-53

Mulkey surpasses 1,000 career points in victory
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women's basketball team won their 19th consecutive game at Tudor Fieldhouse and their 24th straight at home versus a Conference USA opponent by defeating the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters 64-53 Saturday evening.
Rice (15-2, 11-1) swept the weekend series from Louisiana Tech (13-9, 8-8) by shooting 55 percent from the field on Saturday, including a 50 percent performance (7-of-14) from beyond the arc.
Sophomore wing Lauren Schwartz tied a season-high by scoring a game-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field while senior center Nancy Mulkey and junior point guard Jasmine Smith scored 15 points apiece. Mulkey also secured a game-high 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and second of the weekend. The Cypress, Texas native, who was honored pregame during Senior Day ceremonies, also surpassed 1,000 career points in the process.
The Owls' defense held Tech to just 37 percent shooting from floor and zero second chance points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Rice shot 70 percent from the field in the game's first 10 minutes, spearheaded by a 3-for-3 start by Smith (6 points) and a 3-of-4 performance from Schwartz (7 points). Tech also was efficient from the field in the quarter, making 8-of-15 shots with five different players registering points. The two teams played to five different ties and were knotted up at 16-16 at the end of the period.
Second Quarter
The Owls turned up the defensive pressure and limited the Lady Techsters to just 10 points in the quarter on 4-of-13 shooting. Rice closed the quarter on a 7-0 run over the final 3:12 to take a 28-26 advantage at the break.
Third Quarter
Mulkey opened the Owls' scoring in the second half with her third made three-pointer of the season and in doing so eclipsed 1,000 points for her collegiate career. That basket sparked a 9-0 run by the Owls as they built a 37-28 lead. Rice would win the quarter 17-10 and held a 45-36 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Schwartz helped put the game away by scoring a team-best eight points in the final period while Mulkey contributed five points and four rebounds. Rice extended their lead to as high as 60-42 midway through the quarter before sealing the deal on a 64-53 victory.

The Owls will prepare for their final C-USA series of the regular season with a home and home against the North Texas Mean Green. Rice will travel to Denton, Texas on Thursday, Mar. 4 (7 p.m.) before returning to Houston to host the Mean Green on Saturday, Mar. 6 at 4 p.m. Both contests will be streamed on CUSAtv.
