Owls Return Home to Face Lady Techsters
Following a 1-1 weekend at Marshall last week, the Rice Owls women's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of Tudor Fieldhouse for a pair of contests against the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters. This weekend will showcase two of the best defensive teams in the league with Rice allowing just 57.9 points and the Lady Techsters surrendering 59.0 points per game. The Owls have won four straight games in the series vs. La Tech, including a 73-60 overtime victory in Ruston last season.
Defending Home Court
The Owls have won 17 straight at Tudor Fieldhouse, the sixth-longest active streak in the NCAA. Rice went 13-1 at home last season. Over the last three-plus seasons, Rice is 45-2 at home and have won 22 consecutive C-USA games at Tudor.
Last Time Out
The Owls dropped their first game of the C-USA season with a 68-56 loss at Marshall Sunday afternoon. The first place Owls (13-2, 9-1) lost their first game since their narrow 57-53 setback at current No. 3 Texas A&M back on Dec. 20, 2020. The loss snapped Rice's nine-game win streak overall and their 14-game win streak over Conference USA opponents. Rice senior Nancy Mulkey led the Owls with 15 points and nine rebounds while sophomore wing Lauren Schwartz contributed 14 points and senior guard Sydne Wiggins added 12 points.
All About Efficiency
The Owls are one of only four teams in the NCAA that rank Top-10 in the country in both offensive field goal percentage (8th-48.1 ) and defensive field goal percentage (8th-34.1). The other three teams are Baylor (5th/1st), Stephen F. Austin (4th/2nd) and UConn (1st/5th).
Conference Dominance
The Owls have won 43 of their last 46 contests against C-USA opponents dating back to 2018. Rice pushed their conference winning streak to 30 straight wins over C-USA opponents before it was snapped, the longest in league history.
A Pair of Honors for Mulkey
Senior center Nancy Mulkey advanced to the Top-10 on a pair of national watch lists earlier this week. Mulkey was named a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award, as well as a semifinalist for the Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes the total student-athlete among all seniors in the NCAA. Mulkey has previously been named a Lisa Leslie Award Top-10 candidate for the award that recognizes the top center in the NCAA.
