Forbes Wins at Arturo Barrios Invitational
10/16/2021 10:54:00 AM | Women's Cross Country
Owls place fifth out of 32 teams
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Rice women's cross country sophomore Grace Forbes turned in a record-breaking performance on Saturday by besting the Arturo Barrios Invitational meet mark with her third individual victory of the season.
"Grace ran a tremendous race staying with the pack for half of it and then pulling away over the course of the back part," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "As a team this was by far the best meet we've had this year. We closed the gap on Texas A&M from the last time we were here in September and beat a Texas A&M-Corpus squad that had defeated us in our season opener. In addition to Grace, we got really good performances from Lourdes (Vivas de Lorenzi), Rachel (Shoemaker), Caitlin (Wosika), Taigen (Hunter-Galvan), and Maddie (Forbes) and I think our team is really coming together at the right time as we're just now two weeks away from conference and four from regionals. I couldn't be happier with our performance."
Forbes, from Wallingford, Pa., broke away from the pack in the second half of the 6k race to win with a time of 19:53.3, nearly 38 seconds faster than the the next closest collegiate competitor. Forbes ran at a 5:20 pace as she completed her best 6k time as an Owl.
Other Owls who scored for Rice included Vivas de Lorenzi (39th-21:34), Wosika (48th-21:38), Shoemaker (49th-21:38) and Hunter-Galvan (63rd-21:52).
The Owls will now prep for the Conference USA Championships, which will be held in Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday, Oct. 30.
