In Brief: The Rice men's tennis team converted on a pair of deuce points on consecutive serves to grab the doubles point and used that momentum to sweep to a 6-1 win over Lamar in the 2021 dual season home opener at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Details: After Lamar had taken a 6-4 win at the first doubles line, Jacob Eskeland and A.J. Valenty answered with a 6-3 win at the second line. They clinched their match on a deuce point and one serve later Wes Barnett and Trinity Great capped a comeback from a 0-40 deficit to win a deuce point of their own to give the Owls their second doubles point in three matches this spring. In singles, the Owls started a shuffled lineup as several players were not able to play singles due to injuries. Grear picked up his first collegiate win in singles (6-2, 6-2) to increase the margin to 2-0 and Adam Oscislawski and Jacob Eskeland followed in succession to provide the clinch for the Owls. Barnett and Campbell Salmon closed out the scoring for the Owls, Barnett winning a second-set tiebreaker and Salmon a superset after he rebounded from an opening set loss to take the second 6-0.
Efe Ustundag: "It's great to be in a position to play ten deep. We had some guys out due to injuries and had some guys who don't get a chance to play get that chance and they played well. It was a great team effort all the way. The guys who were not able to play did a great job supporting their teammates and the guys who did play fought their butts off. Today was a physical match. Jacob played a big game with a big forehand, but the rest of the guys make a lot of balls and make their opponents very uncomfortable. Those guys (in the heart of the lineup) are just fighting dogs."
Up Next: The Owls (2-1) will join with the men to take on LSU in Baton Rouge on Sunday. First serves are set for noon.
