Head Coach Matt Bragga
A 20-year veteran of the head coaching ranks, Matt Bragga was named the 21st head coach in Rice baseball history on June 15, 2018. He went 26-33 at Rice in his first season in 2019. Prior to Rice Bragga sent 15 years as the Head Coach at Tennessee Tech, building that program into one of the best in the Ohio Valley Conference. The four-time OVC Coach of the Year led the Golden Eagles to three NCAA Tournament appearances, winning six OVC championships in 10 years while reaching 40 or more wins in four of six seasons from 2013-2018. In 2018, he helped Tennessee Tech to its best season in school history, amassing a school and OVC-record 53 wins, the most in the country, while leading the team to the league's regular season title and its first-ever trip to the NCAA Super Regionals. The Jefferson, Ohio, native who played collegiately at Kentucky before a pro playing career, owns a Division I coaching record of 474-438-2. Bragga is aided by assistant coaches Cory Barton (Memphis, 2007, first year), Paul Janish (Rice, 2004; second year), and Connor Teykl (Rice, 2017; first year).
Two Owls Coaching On The Corners
There are two former Rice Owls on Matt Bragga's 2019 coaching staff. Former major leaguer and 2003 Rice National Champion Paul Janish is in his third year with the program as a coach. Janish (Wiess College) played professionally for 13 years with nine seasons in the major leagues, most recently in 2017 with the Baltimore Orioles. Rice graduate Connor Teykl (Baker College 2017) is in his second season as an assistant coach at his alma mater. As a four-year letterman from 2013 to 2016, Teykl helped lead the Rice baseball program to three Conference USA regular season championships and two league tournament titles.
Possible Starting Pitcher
Coach Bragga announced Rice's starting pitcher for the Texas A&M game as sophomore left-hander Brandon Deskins. Coach Bragga will announce the remaining starters for the Marshall series at a later time.
• Brandon Deskins (0-1, 3.97) shares the staff lead in appearances (6) and he has made two previous starts against Houston (March 4) and Texas State (Feb. 26). The 6-foot-1 southpaw from Friendswood, Texas, has the second-best ERA on the Rice staff (3.97) for Owls with at least 10.0 innings this season. Deskins has posted 12 strikeouts in 11.1 innings, one of the best averages on the staff. In his previous midweek start against Houston he recorded new career highs in innings (3.0) and strikeouts (5).
Longtime Foes Meet Again
Rice and Texas A&M have been playing baseball since the very first meeting between the schools in 1914. The foes were league rivals in the Southwest Conference from 1915 to 1996. Even after the two schools changed conferences, the teams have continued to meet at least once every season since then. In fact, the last time the Owls and Aggies did not meet in a college season was 1973. In that year Rice's home SWC series with A&M was canceled due to weather conditions. Texas A&M has won seven of the last eight meetings between the two schools, with Rice claiming a 4-3 victory at Reckling Park in 2016. The 2012 season was the last time for both teams to meet while both were in the Top 10. The Owls won that thriller at College Station by a score of 5-4.
Last Time Out – No. 2 Texas Tech Rallies Past Rice In 11 Innings
LUBBOCK – For the second time in as many days the No. 2 ranked Texas Tech baseball team rallied to overcome a Rice lead and claim a win over the visiting Owls at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock. In Sunday's series finale the Red Raiders scored a combined four runs in the eighth and ninth innings before posting a 7-6 walk-off win in 11 innings.
Records/Series: Rice is now 2-13 on the season. Texas Tech improved to 16-1 overall with its 12th consecutive win. The former conference rivals were meeting for the 116th time dating back to 1958.
Early Lead: Rice batted around to score four runs in the top of the first inning. Four of the first six batters drew walks before senior Rodrigo Duluc lined a one out double to left to drive in two for a 4-0 advantage.
Late Lead: Texas Tech was able to cut the margin to 4-2 after the fifth. The Owls drew a bases loaded walk for a run in the seventh before scoring on a wild pitch in the eighth to make it 6-2 and needing just six more outs for a win.
Home Rally: The Red Raiders rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth and two more in the ninth to force Rice into extra innings for the first time this season. Texas Tech avoided danger after an Austin Bulman single in the top of the eleventh. The Red Raiders drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the inning and pushed across the winning run before the Owls could record an out.
Rice & Shine: Sunday's first pitch was 11:05 a.m. Central Time. The contest was moved to avoid rain that was expected to hit the Lubbock area.
Walk This Way: The Owls drew ten walks in the game, the most for the team since drawing 13 vs. Marshall in the 2019 C-USA Tournament. The Red Raiders were a little more careful around the plate Sunday after Rice tallied a season high 19 base hits in game two of the series.
Good Greenwood: Junior Drake Greenwood worked 5.0 innings for the longest outing of his collegiate career. The former prep star from The Kinkaid School allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out three. Although he did not have a 1-2-3 inning, he was solid in that he faced just four batters three times and five batters two other times.
In The Series: For the weekend senior Bradley Gneiting was a combined 6-for-15 (.400) with three RBI and two runs scored. Junior Trei Cruz was 4-for-10 with two doubles, three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Cruz patiently drew six walks over the weekend for a .625 on-base percentage. He has now reached base in eight consecutive games.
Playing A&M Right After Playing Tech
This week's games marks the first time for Rice to play Texas Tech and then Texas A&M since March of 1995. In 2002 the Owls played both teams, only in reverse order (A&M followed by Tech) on back-to-back days as part of the annual College Classic downtown at Minute Maid Park.
Uni-Watch
For the fashion-minded, Rice's 2020 W-L records while wearing the various uniforms is as follows:

0-1 in blue/gray 'vest' jersey with gray pants

Cruzin' To Preseason Accolades
On Feb. 18 Rice junior shortstop Trei Cruz was named to the initial watch list for the 2020 Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award presented by SR Bats. Since its inception in 2017 the award is based on performance at the plate, academics and personal integrity. Earlier Cruz was also selected as the Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year in the league's annual head coaches' poll. After batting .307 in the prestigious Cape Cod League over the summer and being tabbed as the C-USA Preseason Player of the Year by D1Baseball.com, the Rice shortstop has the full attention of the league's head coaches for 2020. By training under the direction of head coach Matt Bragga, Cruz batted .305 with nine home runs, 11 doubles and 44 RBI. He tied for 15th in the nation with six triples, the eighth-highest single season total in school history and the most by any Owl in the last decade. He also topped the team with 121 total bases and 50 runs scored, while placing among the C-USA leaders in at-bats (sixth) and total plate appearances (seventh). Last summer Cruz was drafted by the Washington Nationals but opted to return to South Main for his third season. So far Rice's opponents have been very careful with the Owl slugger, walking him 18 times in the team's 15 games. On a side note give some credit to the C-USA coaches recognizing individual talent. In 2019 the league coaches selected Matt Canterino as the C-USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year, and the Owl right-hander indeed claimed that honor in the postseason voting. The previous Rice position player to be selected as the C-USA Preseason Player of the Year was shortstop Ford Proctor in 2017.
The C-USA Preseason Poll
In the 2020 C-USA head coaches preseason poll Rice was selected fifth behind Southern Miss, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech and Old Dominion, respectively.
Cutting Edge Tech
Some of the cutting-edge technology Matt Bragga and his staff are introducing this year includes:
• Hit Trax: Software which evaluates swing and mechanics with a powerful video analysis to increase exit velocities and optimize launch angles by capturing real-time metrics and observing results immediately after impact.
• Win Reality: A virtual reality training aid that allows the player to see the game at real time speed from a batters perspective. 2019 CWS champion Vanderbilt was one of three Division I schools to use Win Reality last year and has dedicated an entire room as a lab for Win Reality.
• Rapsodo: A compact, portable pitching monitor with indoor/outdoor capability that has a proprietary radar and camera system which measures ball flight, spin rates and efficiency, release points, velocity, and strike zone analysis.
• Synergy: Software that allows users to watch video of their past games and filter it by pitch, swings, locations, situations, etc., along with spray charts. It is a great tool for scouting upcoming opponents.
