Owls Drop 5-2 Decision to Baylor

Houston: The Rice women's tennis team saw 19th ranked Baylor storm out to a commanding early advantage and take a 5-2 win at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Sunday. The Owls fell to 6-6 on the season while the Bears improved to 8-1.
Doubles: The Bears grabbed the first point of the day with wins at the first two lines while Anna Bowtell and Victoria Smirnova were tied 4-4 at the third line when the point was clinched.
Singles: Baylor streaked to the deciding points with straight set wins at the first, sixth and fifth lines and extended it to 5-0 before the Owls struck back to take the final two points. Smirnova, who picked up the Owls lone first set win, rallied from a 5-1 deficit in a deciding superset to clinch her match 10-6. Bowtell shook off a first set loss and forced a second superset with a 7-1 win in the second-set tiebreaker. She followed that with a 10-4 win in the superset to extend her winning streak to eight matches.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "Credit to Baylor. They were solid as a team from start to finish. Those were nice wins in singles by Viki and Anna. Viki played a solid match and it was good to see Anna right the ship after a shaky start."
Up Next: The Owls will welcome 50th ranked Kansas to GRBTC at 11 a.m. next Saturday.
