Washington State closes homestand next Sunday
Houston: Rice and Kansas battled back and forth for nearly three hours, but the 31st ranked Jayhawks won four of five singles tiebreakers to escape with a 4-3 win at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Saturday.
Doubles: Rice used rallies at the first and third lines to grab the early lead in the match. Kansas struck first with a win at the second line and was serving at 5-5 on the remaining two courts. The Owls broke on both and evened the pursuit for the point at one match each when Michaela Haet and Linda Huang held at the first line to defeat KU's 50th rank duo of Carmen Roxana Manu and Sonia Smagina. The Jayhawks broke back on court three to force a tiebreaker to decide the first point, but Anna Bowtell and Victoria Smirnova swiftly captured the point with a 7-2 win n the first tiebreak set of the day.
Singles: The tone of the match was set in the opening sets of singles when Kansas took two of three tiebreak sets at the first three lines as well as two of the three remaining first sets. Bowtell captured her first set at the fourth line and Haet picked up the Owls lone singles tiebreak win to capture first sets. Bowtell dropped her second set 6-0, but extended her winning streak to nine matches by taking the third set 6-2. Haet rode the momentum of her 7-5 win in her tiebreaker to take the second set 6-3 and the match at the second line over KU's Malkia Ngounoue.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "This match came down to a few points in the matches that we won and the matches we lost. We showed some real resilience on every court, but so did Kansas. That's what we have to expect from every opponent we play. When they win a tight point, we have to have the confidence to continue to play our game. I saw some real growth in our team from our last match and I expect to see that continue. The quality of the tennis and the competitive mindset we showed is something we can build from. It's disappointing that we lost, but I think we took another step forward as a team today. We're going to keep building on this and hopefully that will turn it into a win the next time."
Up Next: The Owls will welcome 37th ranked Washington State to GRBTC at 11 a.m. next Sunday.
