
Missouri State Takes Game Two Saturday, 9-3

Series Finale Set For 1 PM Sunday
HOUSTON – Visiting Missouri State scored six late runs to pull away for a 9-3 win over the Rice baseball team on Saturday at Reckling Park.
Records/Series: Rice is now 1-8 on the season. Missouri State improved to 5-5 overall. The teams were meeting for the seventh time in the series since 1997.
Four MSU Runs Unearned: Missouri State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, which remained the score for six complete innings. MSU then scored four times in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-0 lead, but all the runs were unearned because of an Owl fielding error that allowed the Bears to stay alive.
The Rice Fight: Rice was down 7-0 to start the bottom of the seventh, but continued to fight. Aaron Beaulaurier was hit by a pitch, stole second base and scored on a single by Austin Bulman. In the bottom of the eighth, freshman Tyler LaRue came off the bench to deliver a big pinch hit single that scored two more runs.
Good Series: The top three Owls at the plate this weekend have been Bradley Gneiting (5-for-10, double, triple, 3 RBI, 2 runs), Justin Collins (3-for-7, .600 OB%, three runs scored) and Trei Cruz (3-for-7, homer, 3 RBI, four walks, .636 OB% and two runs scored).
Brogdon Takes Staff Strikeout Lead: Rice starter Blake Brogdon made his third start of the season and struck out five in 5.0 innings. The sophomore right-hander has the team lead with 16 strikeouts in 15.2 innings so far this season.
Collegiate Debut: Redshirt freshman Johnny Hoyle made is collegiate debut in the top of the seventh inning. He finished the day with 1.1 innings of work before true freshman Mathew Santos came on to pitch the final frame.
Finale Sunday At 1 PM: The final game of the weekend series is set for 1 pm Sunday. Arrive at Reckling Park early Sunday to be one of the first 200 fans to receive a free Rice Owls cowboy hat. Of course Sunday is always Kids Day, where young Owls can run the bases one time after the game.
Next Week: After hosting Missouri State the Owls welcome longtime foes Louisiana-Lafayette (March 3) and Houston (March 4) to Reckling Park to close out the current homestand.
