Golf Travels to Laredo for the Border Olympics

HOUSTON — Rice continues a stretch of three tournaments in three weeks this Monday-Tuesday, February 24-25, when it travels to Laredo for the Border Olympics. The tournament will be played at the par-72, 7,297-yard Max Mandel Golf Course.

"We had a great start to the spring season at the All-American Intercollegiate, but that tournament is behind us now. We're focusing on preparing for the Border Olympics. Just staying in the right mindset and preparing for the tournament. We need to figure the course out and get a feel for the greens. We've got a ton of work to do once we get there. Once the gun goes off on Monday, we'll be focusing on just being in the present."

TEAM FIELD

No. 35 Houston and No. 49 Arkansas State lead the Border Olympics field. Also joining Rice are Bowling Green, Campbell, Houston Baptist, Lamar, Little Rock, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, UMKC, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Toledo, UTRGV and UTSA.

Thomas Bockholt III – No. 2 position … third on the team with a 74.17 stroke average … Conference USA Golfer of the Week (2/19) … earned first career top-five finish at the All-American Intercollegiate, tying for fifth-place at -6 … fired back-to-back rounds in the 60's, including a career-low 67 in the final round … the 67 was the third lowest round by a freshman since 1991 … tied for 29^th-place at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational … has three rounds of par or better … made his first collegiate start at the Lone Star Invitational, finishing in 60^th-place.

Campbell Gibson – No. 3 position … has played in three tournaments, averaging 76.00 strokes per round … had his first career top-20 finish at the All-American Intercollegiate, tying for 16^th-place … twice tied a career-best 70 in the first and third rounds … tied for 61^st-place at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational … also set a career-low 54-hole score with a 214 … finished in 64^th-place at the season-opening Lone Star Invitational.

Nicholas Duggan – No. 5 position … the only senior on the team … one of three golfers to participate in all five tournaments … Conference USA Golfer of the Week (10/30) … second on the team with 73.80 strokes per round … has five rounds of par or better … tied for 19^th-place at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational … tied for 22^nd-place at the season-opening Lone Star Invitational … twice carded a season-best 71 at the Trinity Forest Invitational.

PAIRINGS

For Monday's first and second rounds, the Owls will tee off from holes No. 5-8 with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT. Rice will compete in groups with student-athletes from Little Rock, UMKC and UTSA. Tuesday's tee times and pairings will depend on results following the previous round.

Following the Border Olympics, the Owls will travel to Cabo, Mexico for the prestigious Cabo Collegiate, Sun.-Tues., Mar. 1-3.
