Men’s Golf Set to Host Bayou City Collegiate Classic

HOUSTON — After a third-place finish at the season-opening Jackson T. Stephens Cup, the Rice Men's Golf team will host its only tournament of the season, looking to defend its title at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, Sept. 21-22, and Westwood Golf Club in Houston.

TEAM FIELD

Joining Rice in the 13-team field are Abilene Christian, Houston Christian, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Middle Tennessee, Prairie View A&M, Sam Houston, Samford, UT-Arlington, UTRGV, Texas Southern, and Valparaiso.

THE LINEUP

Reggie Zhu – No. 1 position … Is sixth in school history since 1991 in career stroke average (73.19) and average vs. par (1.63) … averaging 71.00 strokes per rounds … two rounds of par or better … earned a fifth-place finish at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup (9/16), closing at -3 … last year, averaged 72.91 strokes per round … 15 rounds of par or better … four rounds in the 60's.

Henry Daly – No. 2 position … averaging 71.33 strokes per round … two rounds of par or better … tied for sixth at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup (9/14-16), where he tied a career-low with a 67 in the final round … last year, was third on the team with a 72.89 stroke average, a 1.37 average to par, and 17 rounds of par or better.

Raines Watson – No. 3 position … averaging 73.67 strokes per round … tied for 13^th-place at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup (9/14-16) … last year, averaged 73.60 strokes per round … 15 rounds of par or better.

Davis Byrd – No. 4 position … averaging 73.67 strokes per round … tied for 13^th-place at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup (9/14-16) … last year, had a 74.78 stroke average … six rounds of par or better.

Nolan Kuszyk – No. 5 position … transfer from Cal Poly … averaging 74.33 strokes per round … tied for 18^th-place at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup (9/14-16) … two-time Second Team All-Big West Conference … averaged 72.81 strokes in two seasons.

William Johnson – Individual … seeing his first action of the year … last year, played in one tournament, at the Trinity Forest Invitational.

Jaivier Pande – Individual … seeing first action of the year … last year, participated in four tournaments ... averaged 74.08 strokes per round … had the best finish of his career, tying for 10th-place at the Colin Montgomerie HCU Invitational (3/2-3) … finished in 11th-place at the All-American Individual (3/16-17) ... fired a career-best 65 in the second round, tying the third lowest round in school history.

Alex Kerins – Individual … seeing first career action … was a Fred Daly All-Ireland finalist…averaged 71.8 strokes per round last year…had five top five finishes…earned medalist honors at the Wicklow Boys Open Championship, where he fired a third round seven-under 62 to set the course record at Greystones Golf Club…earned runner-up finishes at the Irish Men's Amateur Close Championship, where he shot a final round nine-under 64, and the Irish Junior Open…was a semi-finalist at the West of Ireland Open Championship…set the Irish Junior Open Tour record by firing an eight-under 64 at the IJO Elite Tour 9.

Braeden Hoyt – Individual … seeing first action of the year … last year, participated in three tournaments ... averaged 77.89 strokes … tied for 23rd-place at the All-American Individual (3/16-17).

PAIRINGS

Play begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CT. The Owls will tee off from holes No. 1-4 and will compete in groups with student-athletes from Abilene Christian and Sam Houston. Tuesday's tee times and pairings will depend on results following the previous round.

UP NEXT

Following the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, the Owls will travel to Dallas for the Trinity Forest Invitational on Oct. 4-6.
