Rice Wins Battle of the Owls in Boca Raton, 78-69

Ogwumike scores 30 points in victory
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Rice senior guard Erica Ogwumike recorded a season-high 30 points to help guide the Owls to a 78-69 road victory Thursday evening at Florida Atlantic.
Rice (8-6, 3-0) remained unbeaten in conference play this season and ran their overall conference win streak to 22 straight dating back to 2018, the nation's fourth-longest active streak.
Ogwumike made 11-of-16 shots from the field and 8-of-13 at the free throw line to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds for her third consecutive double-double. The Owls also received double-digit scoring performances from junior center Nancy Mulkey (15 points) and freshman wing Lauren Schwartz (12 points).
Rice scored a season-high 52 points in the paint and recorded 12 steals, their second-highest output of the season.
FAU (7-7, 1-2) was led in scoring by freshman Lotta Vehka-Aho, who scored a season-high 28 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Rice outscored FAU 19-15 in the opening 10 minutes behind 10 points from Ogwumike. The senior guard made 5-of-7 shots from the field while also grabbing six rebounds. Rice scored 14 of their 19 points in the paint and scored six points off FAU turnovers.
Second Quarter
The Owls continued their efficient offense by shooting 54 percent from the field and outscoring FAU 17-16. Schwartz (6 points) and Ogwumike (5 points) paced the offense as Rice continued their dominance in the paint with 14 more points. Schwartz gave Rice some momentum going into halftime by scoring on a layup with two seconds remaining to give the Owls a 36-31 advantage.
Third Quarter
FAU made a charge midway through the period, cutting Rice's lead down to 49-45 with 4:29 remaining, but the Owls stabilized themselves by outscoring FAU 13-6 the rest of the quarter. Ogwumike poured in eight more points in the period while Mulkey chipped in five points to give Rice a 62-51 lead going to the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Rice never allowed FAU to get any closer than nine points the rest of the way, building a lead as large as 15 points on three separate occasions. Ogwumike (7 points) and Mulkey (6 points) gave the Owls the breathing room they needed to secure the victory.
