Owls Travel to Miami to Face Panthers
Out to a 3-0 start in Conference USA, the Owls look to wrap up their road trip on a winning note Saturday when they face the Panthers in Miami at 1 p.m. CT on CUSAtv. Rice is 3-1 under Coach Langley against FIU, including a 76-44 victory over the Panthers last season in Houston.
About FIU
The Panthers snapped a four-game losing streak and recorded their first C-USA victory of the season on Saturday at home against North Texas, 58-56. FIU is led in scoring by senior center Chelsea Guimaraes (10.1 ppg) and junior guard Jiselle Thomas (10.1 ppg). As a team the Panthers are averaging just 53.1 points while surrendering 65.5 points.
Last Time Out
Rice senior guard Erica Ogwumike recorded a season-high 30 points to help guide the Owls to a 78-69 road victory Thursday evening at Florida Atlantic. Ogwumike made 11-of-16 shots from the field and 8-of-13 at the free throw line to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds for her third consecutive double-double. The Owls also received double-digit scoring performances from junior center Nancy Mulkey (15 points) and freshman wing Lauren Schwartz (12 points). Rice scored a season-high 52 points in the paint and recorded 12 steals, their second-highest output of the season.
Ogwumike, Schwartz Earn C-USA Weekly Honors
Following a pair of impressive victories, Ogwumike and Schwartz were selected the Conference USA Player of the Week and Co-Freshman of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Monday. Ogwumike averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds last week while shooting 48 percent from the field. In a rematch of last year's C-USA semifinals against WKU, Ogwumike scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while playing 40 minutes in Rice's 73-65 win. Schwartz, who was the Freshman of the Week back on Nov. 18, becomes just the third Owl to ever win multiple C-USA Freshman of the Week awards in a season and the first since Christal Porter in 2012. The guard averaged 13.5 points on 53 percent shooting along with 5.0 rebounds in 32 minutes per game.
C-USA Dominance
The Owls have the fourth-longest active conference win streak in the country dating back to 2018, having won 22 straight league contests. Only UConn (138), Baylor (43) and FGCU (30) have won more consecutive conference games than the Owls. The Owls went 16-0 in league play last year with a winning margin of 19.2 points per game. Rice finished the season as one of just seven teams undefeated in conference play across the nation. Only Houston (16-0; 2010-11) and UTEP (16-0; 2007-08) completed perfect C-USA seasons before Rice, neither of which won their respective conference tournaments.
Stingy Defense
Dating back to last season the Owls have held 34 straight opponents below 70 points and 35 straight opponents below 45 percent shooting. Thru 13 games Rice is surrendering just 55.9 points per game.
Up Next
Rice returns to Houston for a two-game homestand, starting Thursday, Jan. 16 vs. Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. The Owls will then host Southern Miss on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m.
