Owls Continue Winning Ways, Defeat FIU 68-47

MIAMI, Fla. – The Rice Owls women's basketball team cruised to their fourth consecutive victory, defeating FIU 68-47 on Saturday afternoon.
Rice (9-6, 4-0) broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring FIU (4-11, 1-3) by a 23-6 margin thanks to a 14-0 run. Three Owls scored in double-figures, led by 12 points apiece from sophomore guard Jasmine Smith and freshman wing Lauren Schwartz.
Erica Ogwumike recorded her fourth straight double-double and fifth of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. In the process, Ogwumike (1,330 points as an Owl) surpassed Kirra Jordan for ninth place on the Rice all-time scoring list.
The Owls shot over 50 percent from the field for the third time in their last four contests, connecting at a 51 percent rate while limiting FIU to just 31 percent shooting. Rice dominated down low, outscoring the Panthers 40-16 in points in the paint and held an 18-2 advantage in fastbreak points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Smith scored seven first quarter points and hit Rice's first three-pointer of the afternoon. The Owls shot 46 percent from the field but FIU answered with a 54 percent clip, including a pair of three-pointers and led 17-16 after one period.
Second Quarter
Rice dug in defensively by limiting FIU to just eight second quarter points on 4-of-13 shooting and won the period 14-8 to take the lead at halftime. Five different Owls registered points in the quarter, which included three-pointers from Smith and freshman India Bellamy. The Owls ended the quarter on a 7-2 run to grab momentum.
Third Quarter
The Owls exploded out of the gates with the 14-0 run to begin the period, hitting six of their first seven shots from the field. Ogwumike started the run with four consecutive points, followed by five straight points from Schwartz and a three-pointer by Sydne Wiggins.
Fourth Quarter
Rice extended their lead to as much as 26 points in the final period as the Owls won their 23rd consecutive C-USA contest.

The Owls return home to Houston for a pair of games next week, starting on Thursday, Jan. 16 vs. Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. Rice will then host Southern Miss on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m.
