Owls Return Home Winners of Four Straight, Host Louisiana Tech
Rice returns to the friendly confines of Tudor Fieldhouse this Thursday riding a four-game C-USA winning streak, hosting Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. on CUSAtv. The Owls have started 4-0 in the new year and have won those contests by an average of 19 points. Rice is 6-1 at home this season and haven't lost a C-USA home tilt since Mar. 1, 2018 (70-62) against these same Lady Techsters. Tech enters Thursday coming off an 87-80 home victory over UTEP and are 1-3 on the road this season. The Owls won both meetings vs. Tech last season, including a 78-42 home victory which drew the largest attendance (2,606) since Tudor Fieldhouse opened in 2008.
About Louisiana Tech
Picked to finish ninth in the C-USA Preseason Poll, the Lady Techsters have started 1-2 in conference play. Tech is averaging 71.7 points per contest, which ranks third in the league. They also force a little over 20 turnovers and shoot 33.5 percent from three-point territory, both which rank second in C-USA. Reigning Co-CUSA Player of the Week Keiunna Walker is the team's leading scorer (12.1 ppg).
C-USA Dominance
The Owls have the fourth-longest active conference win streak in the country dating back to 2018, having won 23 straight league contests. Only UConn (139), Baylor (44) and FGCU (32) have won more consecutive conference games than the Owls. The 23 consecutive wins is also the longest conference winning streak in league history. The Owls went 16-0 in league play last year with a winning margin of 19.2 points per game. Rice finished the season as one of just seven teams undefeated in conference play across the nation. Only Houston (16-0; 2010-11) and UTEP (16-0; 2007-08) completed perfect C-USA seasons before Rice, neither of which won their respective conference tournaments.
Last Time Out
The Owls cruised to their fourth consecutive victory, defeating FIU 68-47 last Saturday afternoon. Rice broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring FIU by a 23-6 margin thanks to a 14-0 run. Three Owls scored in double-figures, led by 12 points apiece from sophomore guard Jasmine Smith and freshman wing Lauren Schwartz. Erica Ogwumike recorded her fourth straight double-double and fifth of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Efficient on Offense
The Owls have shot 50 percent from the field or better in three of their four C-USA games with the lone exception being a 46 percent performance in their win over WKU. Since the turn of the calendar to January, the Owls are shooting 50.7 percent from the field as a team with Ogwumike (18.3 ppg), Schwartz (12.8 ppg), and Wiggins (10.0 ppg) all averaging double-figures in points.
