Men’s Hoops Opens C-USA Home Slate with Florida Atlantic in Battle of Owls

HOUSTON — Rice begins its Conference USA home schedule this Thursday, Jan. 9 when it hosts Florida Atlantic. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and the game will be livestreamed by ESPN+.
Scouting Rice
• Rice enters Thursday night's game with an 8-7 record, including 0-2 in Conference USA. The Owls are looking to snap a three-game losing streak after falling at WKU, 68-61, last Saturday afternoon.
• Sophomore Trey Murphy III leads the Owls with 13.4 points per game and 1.2 steals per game while placing third in rebounds (5.8). He is also third in the league in three-pointers made per game (2.5).
• Senior Robert Martin is second on the team with 11.5 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game, which is 10th in the conference.
• Sophomore Drew Peterson is third on the team in scoring (10.5) and leads the team and is seventh in C-USA with 6.7 rebounds per game. He also leads the team in assists (3.1) and three-point field goal percentage (.386) and is seventh in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5).
• Senior Ako Adams is fourth on the team with 10.3 points per game and second with 2.2 assists per game. He is also third in Conference USA in free throw percentage (88.6%) and second on the team in three-pointers made per game (2.1).
• Rice is averaging 73.3 points while allowing 74.1.
• The Owls are connecting on 42.3% from the floor and 33.0% from three while allowing their opponents to connect on 44.8% from the field but just 30.5% from three.
• Rice's opponents are outrebounding the Owls, 38.1-to-37.2 but the Owls are second in the conference in three-pointers made per game (9.4).
• Head coach Scott Pera is in his third season leading the Rice men's basketball program. He holds a record of 28-50.

• Florida Atlantic enters today's contest with a 10-5 record, including 2-0 in Conference USA. The Owls have won six of their last seven games after sweeping last week's Conference USA openers against UTSA and UTEP, the latter by a 59-56 score.
• Graduate transfer guard Cornelius Taylor is the only player scoring double-figures with 10.4 points per game. He's also tied for the team lead in assists with 1.9 per game.
• Sophomore guard Michael Forrest is second on the team with 9.9 points per game and is tied for 10th in the league in free throw percentage, connecting on 82.6% from the charity stripe.
• Sophomore forward/center Karlis Silins is third on the team with 9.3 points per game and eighth in the conference in field goal percentage, connecting on 54.3% from the floor.
• Junior guard Richardson Maitre is fourth in C-USA in three-point field goal percentage (46.7%) while averaging 7.9 points per game and sophomore forward Madiaw Niang leads the team with 4.8 rebounds per game.
• Florida Atlantic is scoring 71.7 points per game while allowing just 65.5.
• FAU is connecting on 42.9% from the floor and 33.8% from three while holding its opponents to 42.8% from the floor and 32.4% from beyond the arc.
• The Owls are outrebounding their opponents, 37.3-to-33.3.
• Head coach Dusty May is in his second season at the helm of the Florida Atlantic men's basketball program where he owns a 27-21 (.563) record.
