Owls Travel to UTEP in Search of 7th Straight
The Conference USA leading Rice Owls will look to remain unbeaten in league play when they travel to UTEP on Thursday. The Owls have started 6-0 in the new year, winning those contests by an average of 16.6 points. UTEP has won four of their last five games, including a 94-54 win over UTSA last Saturday. The Owls have won the last three meetings with the Miners, including a 76-42 win last season in Houston.
About UTEP
The Miners lead all of C-USA in scoring margin (+13.1), rebound margin (+5.7), and turnovers forced (20.8). In addition they rank second in the league in assists per game (15.8), scoring (71.9 ppg), three-point defense (23.8), and three-point FG percentage (33.5). UTEP is led in scoring by post Katarina Zec (13.3 ppg) while point guard Katia Gallegos leads C-USA in assists per game (5.0).
C-USA Dominance
The Owls have the fourth-longest active conference win streak in the country dating back to 2018, having won 25 straight league contests. Only UConn (142), Baylor (46) and FGCU (33) have won more consecutive conference games than the Owls. The 25 consecutive wins is also the longest conference winning streak in league history. The Owls went 16-0 in league play last year with a winning margin of 19.2 points per game. Rice finished the season as one of just seven teams undefeated in conference play across the nation. Only Houston (16-0; 2010-11) and UTEP (16-0; 2007-08) completed perfect C-USA seasons before Rice, neither of which won their respective conference tournaments.
Last Time Out
Behind career-high performances from junior center Nancy Mulkey (29 points) and sophomore guard Jasmine Smith (21 points), the Rice Owls women's basketball team notched their sixth consecutive win by defeating Southern Miss 75-64 last Sunday at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls established season-highs in field goal percentage (60.4%) and points in the paint (54) and recorded 20 assists.
Mulkey Co-C-USA Player of the Week
Rice junior center Nancy Mulkey was recognized by Conference USA as the Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Mulkey averaged 18 points, 13.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks while shooting a staggering 75 percent (15-of-20) from the field in 32.5 minutes per contest.
Efficient on Offense
The Owls have shot 50 percent from the field or better in four straight games and five of their last six C-USA games, including a season-best 60.4 percent showing in the win over Southern Miss. Since the turn of the calendar to January, the Owls are shooting 52.2 percent from the field as a team with Ogwumike (18.3 ppg), Mulkey (12.2 ppg), and Schwartz (10.5 ppg) all averaging double-figures in points.
