Big Plays Pace Wake Forest over Rice

Owls host Texas next Saturday
Tom Stewart threw for one touchdown and rushed for a second after coming on in relief of starter Wiley Green, but Wake Forest's Jamie Newman threw for three scores to lead the Demon Deacons to a 41-21 win at Rice Stadium on Friday night.
The Details:
Newman led Wake to a pair of scores in the first six minutes of the game to stake out an early 14-0 lead, but unlike their meeting in 2018 when Wake Forest stormed to a 42-3 halftime lead, the Owls responded with 14 points of their own. Green led the Owls to the Deacons one-yard line, but sustained an injury on a rushing play and was taken from the field after a lengthy delay. He was taken to Methodist Hospital in the Medical Center for tests and evaluation. Aston Walter scored his first career touchdown on the first play after the game resumed and the Rice defense forced a three and out. Austin Trammell returned the Wake punt 34 yards to set the Owls up at the Wake 40. A pair of Stewart completions placed the ball at the 10 and the graduate transfer from Harvard covered the final 10 on his own to tie the game at 14 each. The Owls held the Deacon's fast-paced attack to a pair of field goals after they had reached inside the Rice six. But a pair of quick strike scores in the second half, covering a combined 167 yards in only four plays, bracketed by a fourth down stop of the Owls at the Wake four, put the game out of reach.
The Notes:
- Stewart was 19-of-30 for 185 yards and a touchdown. It was his 16th career touchdown and his first at Rice.
- Stewart also scored on a 10-yard run. It was his second career touchdown and the first at Rice.
- RB Aston Walter had eight rushes for 29 yards and a touchdown.
- Walter scored on a one-yard touchdown run, the first career touchdown for the sixth year senior.
- WR Brad Rozner caught six passes for 103 yards. It was his first career 100-yard game.
- WR Austin Trammell caught six pass for 67 yards and a touchdown. It was his first touchdown of the year and the fourth of his career.
- Trammell returned a 34-yard punt in the second quarter. It was the second longest punt return of his career, just shy of a 35-yarder against Army West Point in 2017.
- TE Jordan Myers tied a career-high with four receptions.
