HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women's cross country team placed four of their top five runners inside the Top-20 to earn 61 total points and place third in the eight-team field at Friday's season-opening Rice Invitational.

Senior Khayla Patel stole the show with a come-from-behind first place result of 13:44.97/3:26, edging out Stephen F. Austin's Kelsey Ramirez (13:45.25) at the finish line. The victory was Patel's third of her career and her second at the Rice Invitational.

The Owls' sophomore class of Alyssa Balandran (7th-14:21.89), Ashley Messineo (11th-14:34.67), Mary Claire Neal (18th-14:47.14), and Caitlin Wosika (24th-14:56.54) all finished in the top-25 behind Patel.
Loren Goddard (29th-15:04.72), Stephanie Hallow (32nd-15:14.95), Natalie Goddard (36th-15:28.06), Nicole Mitchell (45th-15:49.59), and Sage McAdams (16:12.94) rounded out the order for the Owls.

Rice's next race will come Saturday, Sept. 28 when the team travels to Lake Charles, La. for the Cowboy Stampede.
