COACH'S CORNER: Rice soccer is under the direction of head coach Brian Lee, who is in his first season at the helm of the program. A 2018 finalist for National Coach of the Year and with 25 years of experience as a Division I head coach, Lee enters the 2019 campaign with a career record of 287-188-55. Lee's Rice coaching staff includes Megan Kinneman, Travis Curson and Allysha Chapman, all in their first year with the Owl program. Coach Lee's video preview is available at the above link.
MANANQUIL ON HERMAN TROPHY WATCH LIST: Senior Lianne Mananquil is one of 61 Division I women's soccer players named to the inaugural 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, presented by World Wide Technology, the United Soccer Coaches and Missouri Athletic Club announced on Aug. 1…. The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding women's and men's players of the year. The award's respective watch lists are compiled by members of the United Soccer Coaches Men's and Women's NCAA Division I All-America Committees… A year ago Mananquil was named the Conference USA Midfielder of the Year as well as a First Team All-South Region honoree. The Jacksonville, Fla., native tied the Rice record in for assists in a single season (10) while did some scoring of her own. She netted the game-winning goal at Charlotte on the final weekend of the season to clinch Rice's spot in the C-USA Tournament. Her play on the field is only part of the story. Mananquil maintained a 3.74 grade point average to be named a Conference USA Academic Medalist and a Rice Honor Athlete.
C-USA PRESEASON ACCOLADES: IRVING, Texas – Led by Lianne Mananquil as a preseason Conference USA selection, the Rice soccer team was picked third overall in the 2019 C-USA head coaches' poll announced on Aug. 12. The preseason all-conference honors and ranking were determined on a vote of the 14 C-USA head soccer coaches. It is the seventh-straight year for Rice to be picked to finish among the league's Top 3 teams in the annual head coaches' poll. Defending regular season co-champions North Texas and Florida Atlantic were picked first and second in the 2019 poll, respectively.
ACC STANDOUT JOINS OWLS: Coach Lee announced the addition of ACC junior transfer Mijke Roelfsema to the Owls' roster for the upcoming 2019 season. Roelfsema is a 5-8 defender from The Netherlands who played the last two seasons at Boston College. A year ago she started 15 matches and logged more than 1,300 total minutes for an Atlantic Coast Conference program that posted a 14-5-1 record and earned a Top 16 national seed in the NCAA Tournament. Where Roelfsma was a key part of swarming Golden Eagle defense that held opponents to an austere 8.5 shots per game, she also provided an attacking presence out of the backline. A year ago the native of Den Haag scored the game-winning goal against crosstown rival Boston University.
IMPROVING VIA EXHIBITIONS: The Owls played two preseason exhibitions prior to Thursday's official opener at ORU. In the team's first exhibition on Aug. 13 Rice battled a TCU team that has made three-straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament to a 1-1 tie. The Blue & Gray then posted a convincing 4-1 victory over Lamar in the squad's second exhibition on Aug. 17.
RICE IN OPENERS: Since starting the soccer program in 2001, Rice is 5-11-2 in season-openers. In 2018 the Owls lost the season-opener at home to Big 12 power Texas 3-0. The Blue & Gray is looking for its first win in a season-opening match since 2008. Rice has not won a season-opening road game since 2006, posting a 1-0 victory at TCU.
THE RICE-ORU SERIES: Rice and Oral Roberts have met twice before in soccer, with each team claiming a win on the other's home field. The Owls topped ORU 2-1 in the first meeting between teams in 2001 (Rice's debut season of Division I soccer). The Golden Eagles then blanked Rice 3-0 in Houston the following season.
DID YOU KNOW?: Rice is making its first trip to Tulsa since 2016. The Owls have posted a respectable ledger when playing in "T-Town," compiling a 5-5 overall record against ORU, Tulsa and Memphis (as a part of a neutral site tournament).
CITY SHOWDOWN ON DECK: After facing ORU the Owls host crosstown rival Houston at 7 pm on Sunday to close out Rice University's O-Week festivities. The contest is free for Rice students with their University I.D.
