
Card-Childers Sits Second in Decathlon at C-USA Championships

Totaled 3597 points on day one
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Senior decathlete Charlie Card-Childers led the way for the Rice Owls men's track and field team by collecting 3597 points through the first five events of the decathlon Thursday on day one of the Conference USA Outdoor Championships, hosted by Charlotte at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center.
Card-Childers, from Houston, won the high jump with a clearance of 2.02m (6-7.50) for 822 points and placed second in the shot put with a throw of 11.78m (38-7.75). Card-Childers began the day by placing fourth (11.33) in the 100m dash for 789 points and also collected 723 points in the 400m hurdles (52.03).
Rice freshman Corbett Fong also put forth a strong day one performance by totaling 3373 points, good enough for fourth place. The Tomball, Texas native established season-best marks in the 100m dash (11.30-3rd-795 pts), shot put (10.38m-7th-508 pts) and 400m hurdles (50.74-3rd-781 pts). Fellow freshman teammate Keegan O'Connor will enter Friday in seventh place overall with 3030 points after closing strong with a second place result (50.63) in the 400m hurdles.
UTSA's Gary Haasbroek (3838 points) will enter Friday with a 241 point lead in the event with the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m remaining.
The decathlon will pick back up on Friday starting with the 110m hurdles at 1:45 p.m. (CT).
