Freshman Rivera wins pole vault
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls men's track and field squad won two events and placed five athletes in the top-three to begin their 2019 indoor campaign with a full squad at the Houston Invitational at Yeoman Fieldhouse.
Freshman vaulter Natan Rivera stole the show by not only winning his first collegiate competition, but by clearing 5.20m (17-00.75) for the third-best indoor vault in program history. Rivera, from San Salvador, El Savador, set an El Salvador national record with his final attempt and recorded the second-best mark in C-USA this season. Fellow freshman Thomas Pratt placed seventh in the same event, clearing 4.90m (16-00.75) for the seventh-best ever indoor clearance by an Owl.
Freshman thrower Elian Ahmar also posted a solid debut for the Owls, placing third in the shot put with a throw of 16.22m (53-02.75) on his final attempt. His mark ranks fourth in C-USA. The Owls also received a top-three finish from Michael Yow (18.36m/60-03.00) in the weight throw, which also is fourth-best in C-USA.
On the track, senior Reagan Olguin won the 800m with a time of 1:53.37, which ranks third in C-USA, while junior Matthew Murray placed second (4:10.96) in the mile. To close out competition, Clay Musial (8:34.02) and Hociel Landa (8:36.76) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 3000m.
The Owls will next compete at the Charlie Thomas Invitational, which will take place Feb. 1-2 at Texas A&M in College Station.
