Baseball Season Comes To A Close With Saturday Loss

Three USM Pitchers Combine To No-Hit Owls In Elimination Game
No Owl Hits: Rice finished the game without a base hit, and the Owls had only one base runner in the contest. Three Southern Miss pitchers, Gabe Shepard, Cody Carroll and Hunter Stanley, combined for the no-hitter.
Records: The Owls close out the 2019 campaign with a 26-33 record. Southern Miss improved to 37-19 and advances to Sunday's Championship Final (against the winner of either Florida Atlantic or UTSA on the other side of the bracket).
Of Note: The last time Rice finished a game without a base hit was in a 7.0 inning Southwest Conference game against Texas A&M in 1988. In 1992, a U.H. pitcher threw 10.1 no-hit innings, but Rice went on to win that game 1-0 in 13 inn.
How Tough? Collins-Tough: Rice's lone base runner in the game was when sophomore catcher Justin Collins drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the sixth. Not only did Collins end up leading the team with 41 walks for the full season, he played the majority of the year with a broken bone in his arm.
Coach Bragga said: "You never want to be on this side of a game like that but you also have to tip your cap to Southern Miss, specially that freshman (Gabe Shepard the starter)," said Rice head coach Matt Bragga. "That kid threw the heck out of the baseball. He beat us with the fastball today. He threw 98 (mph), and was still 97 in the seventh inning. We knew he was very good, and he had a special say today. I honestly thought we battled on the mound today. Jackson Parthasarathy allowed only one earned run, and another was after an umpire's interference call. It was still only 3-0 after six innings. Our pitchers were giving it all they could to keep the game close. This was year one for me (as the Rice head coach). I learned a lot about our program, and I learned about what Rice is all about. I have a lot of notes about what we will want to do this summer and heading into next fall to get better, and get this program where it needs to be.
