Owls End LA Tech Rally With Dramatic Triple Play
HOUSTON – The Rice baseball team held off a ninth inning rally by recording a dramatic triple play, preserving a 4-2 Conference USA victory over No. 18 ranked Louisiana Tech in the second game of a weekend series Saturday afternoon at Reckling Park.
Turning Point: Rice held a 4-0 lead to start the top of the ninth inning, but the No. 18 ranked Bulldogs continued to battle. Four consecutive base hits to start the frame cut the margin to 4-2 with no outs and runners on first and second. Rice senior first baseman Brandt Frazier then made a sensational diving catch on a shallow popped up bunt near home plate. Frazier quickly bounced to his feet and rifled a throw to shortstop Trei Cruz covering second base. Cruz stepped on the bag to double-off the lead runner and then applied a tag to the trailing runner at second for the respective second & third outs - ending the game.
Triple Play Veterans: Rice had turned a triple play as recently as last season. At the Conference USA Tournament in Biloxi, Miss., the Owls turned a 5-4-3 round-the-horn triple play against Florida Atlantic.
Multi-Out Plays: The triple play proved to overshadow the three double plays the Owls turned earlier in the game (in the 5th, 6th and 8th innings). Saturday's three double plays are the second-most recorded by the Blue & Gray in a game this season after turning four at Texas (April 9).
Records: The Owls won for the fifth time in a row to improve to 20-23 on the season and 11-9 in C-USA league play. LA Tech is now 28-15 overall and 12-8 in conference.
games.
Scoreless Stretch For Kravetz: Senior starter Evan Kravetz was again sound and solid. The left-hander scattered five hits over 7.1 scoreless innings while striking out seven. Kravetz has not allowed a run in his last 17.0 innings of work, and he has posted 22 strikeouts in the current scoreless streak.
19-Straight For Comeaux: Junior third baseman Braden Comeaux collected a pair of hits to extend his streak of reaching base to 19 consecutive games, the longest stretch by any Owl this season.
Back-To-Back Saves: Reliever Garrett Gayle notched his third save of the season. With a Kendal Jefferies save in the series opener on Friday Rice has recorded saves in back-to-back games for the first time this season. The last accomplished that feat a year ago at the C-USA Tournament.
