Canterino & Jefferies Help Owls Secure 4th-Straight Victory
HOUSTON – Rice collected three runs on three hits, and the pitching duo of Matt Canterino and Kendal Jefferies made it stand up, as the Owls' baseball team claimed a 3-1 Conference USA victory over No. 18 ranked Louisiana Tech in the opening game of a weekend series Friday evening at Reckling Park.
Home Run Tracker: The Owls added another home run Friday on a solo shot by Braden Comeaux to give the team a total of 38 this year. Rice has already zoomed past its 2018 total of 35 home runs in just two-thirds of the at bats. The squad entered the weekend tied for third in the conference in home runs and has been blasting the taters at a rate of just under one per game (0.91), the best the program has done in the last nine years. Overall the squad's slugging percentage is higher this season (.422) than a year ago (.386). Rice also already has 14 triples to surpass its full-season total from one year ago.
Can Do Canterino: Junior Matt Canterino was sound and solid in making his 11th start of the season. The right-hander from Southlake, Texas, won his sixth game by scattering six hits and a walk in 7.0 shutout innings and striking out ten. Canterino reached double-digit Ks for the third time this season and the 12th time in his career. With 313 career strikeouts Canterino is now in sole possession of tenth place on Rice's all-time list. He needs just one more strikeout to tie to Eddie Degerman (2004-2006) for ninth place in the Rice ledgers.
Can Do Kendal: Senior Kendal Jefferies worked the final two frames to earn his team-leading fourth save of the season. The save was Jefferies' second, and the staff's third, in C-USA games.
Records: The Owls won for the fourth time in a row to improve to 19-23 on the season and 10-9 in C-USA league play. LA Tech is now 28-14 overall and 12-7 in conference.
Big Crowd: The crowd of 3,879 was Rice's largest of the season, including the Feb. 19 game against the Texas Longhorns (3,255). This season the Blue & Gray have averaged 2,456 fans for 25 home games.
Streaks: With Friday's longball Braden Comeaux has reached base in each of the last 18 games, the longest streak by any Owl this season.
