Carvalho sets season-best time in steeplechase
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls men's track and field team closed out their home portion of the 2019 outdoor season Saturday at the 16th annual J. Fred Duckett Twilight.
Rice closed the evening strong in the distance events, highlighted by a victory from Alex Topini in the 1500m. The sophomore from The Woodlands, Texas won his first career event by finishing in 3:52.65, just seconds before his second place teammate Reagan Olguin (3:56.66).
Later in the evening, redshirt junior Adolfo Carvalho achieved a season-best time of 9:12.75 to finish as the top collegiate runner in the 3000m steeplechase. Sophomore Hociel Landa was the second collegiate finisher in the race, crossing the finish line in 9:19.20.
Rice began the day with redshirt freshman thrower Nick Hicks setting a personal record in the discus with a throw of 50.44m (165-06), which ranks third in C-USA as of Saturday. Hicks would also later finish as the second-best (56.09m) collegiate thrower in the hammer, finishing behind teammate Michael Yow (58.91m).
Redshirt junior thrower Dane Stolsig continued his strong campaign with a second place result in the javelin, recording a throw of 61.52m (201-10).
Freshman vaulters Natan Rivera (5.24m/17-02.25) and Thomas Pratt (4.94m/16-02.50) put the finishing touch on a stellar evening by placing first and third, respectively.
The Owls will be off next weekend before returning to the track on May 3, splitting competition at the Arkansas Twilight and Tom Tellez Invitational (UH) as the final tune-up before the C-USA Championships, May 9-12 in Charlotte.
