
Owls Blank Cougars to Close Regular Season

Host C-USA Championship next week
The Lead: Victoria Smirnova won her team-leading 13th match of the year while Priya Niezgoda delivered the clinching point as the Rice women's tennis team downed Houston 4-0 at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility on Friday. The win was the 40th ranked Owls first of the year on the road and closed out their regular season schedule. They will host the Conference USA Championship April 18-21.
Doubles: The Owls (13-7) raced to the doubles point as both of their ranked duos posted 6-1 wins. 80th ranked Anastasia Smirnova and Niezgoda finished first while 59th ranked Michaela Haet and Linda Huang followed shortly after.
Singles: Rice maintained the momentum into singles, winning five of six first sets in singles. Victoria Smirnova was off the court quickly at the second line, losing only one game to improve to 13-5 in her first season of college tennis. Anna Bowtell recorded her 10th win of the year to add the third point, setting the stage for Niezgoda, who extended her own career-high for singles wins with her 12th.
Up Next: The Owls will welcome the rest of Conference USA to the George R. Brown Tennis Center next week as hosts of the conference championship. Play opens on Thursday with six matches with the top two seeds earning byes in the opening round. Seeding will be announced early next week.
