Rice downs William & Mary 6-1
The Lead: The Rice women's tennis team flipped the script from Friday's loss to Princeton, sweeping the tiebreaker sets in singles on their way to a 6-1 win over William & Mary at Jadwin Gymnasium on the campus of Princeton University on Saturday.
Doubles: Rice grabbed the initial point thanks to wins at the second and third lines. 57th ranked Anastasia Smirnova and Priya Niezgoda clinched the point with a 6-4 win the second line.
Singles: Rice captured all six first sets of singles, but needed three tiebreak wins to do so. In their loss to Princeton on Friday, the Owls dropped a pair of tiebreakers in the opening sets of singles. Michaela Haet and Anastasia Smirnova upped the lead to 3-0 with straight set wins while Victoria Smirnova needed a tiebreak win in her second set to deliver the clinch point. Niexzgoda and Anna Bowtell rode the momentum of their tiebreaks in the first set to close out their matches in straight sets to round out the scoring.
Up Next: The Owls will return to competition on April 5 when they open a weekend homestand that features the final regular season home duals when they host USF. The homestand concludes on Sunday, April 7 when they host defending C-USA Champion FIU for Senior Day.
