HOUSTON — Rice went down early in all three doubles matches, but came back to sweep USF, 4-0, Friday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Doubles: The teams split the first two matches as Anastasia Smirnova and Diae El Jardi defeated Alexandria Mjos and Selin Yaylali, 6-2, on Court 3. USF won on Court 2, 6-2. But, trailing 4-3, Michaela Haet and Linda Huang won four of the next five games to defeat Nicola Dzenga and Vanja Klaric, 7-5 to secure the doubles point for the Owls.
Singles: Anastasia Smirnova wasted no time in getting Rice a 2-0 lead, dispatching Laura Pellicer Perello in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Victoria Smirnova followed her twin sister with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Vanja Klaric. Michaela Haet, the 109th-player in the country, then clinched the match for the Owls, defeating the 46th-ranked player Ana Roman Dominguez, 6-1, 6-2. It was her second victory over a ranked opponent this year.
Elizabeth Schmidt: Doubles has been a solid point for us this year. Sometimes we've come out and used the momentum from it and sometimes we haven't. I was really proud of our team for keeping the momentum going after doubles. We had no let down, we came on and kept our foot on the accelerator. We had an attitude out there and it was nice to see the whole group continue the momentum of winning the doubles point.
Up Next: The Owls will face C-USA foe FIU this Sunday, Apr. 7, at 10 a.m. It will be the annual Senior Day as Rice honors senior Fernanda Astate.
