
Golf in 17th Place after Day One of Lake Charles Toyota Invitational

Lake Charles, La. — Rice golf sits in 17th place after the first two rounds of the Lake Charles Toyota Invitational, played at the par 72, 7,007-yard Country Club at the Golden Nugget.
The Owls carded rounds of 298 and 290 to finish the day 12-over par.
Junior Nicholas Duggan, sophomore Jake Benson and freshman Austin Escamilla are all tied for 61st place at two-over par. Duggan posted rounds of 72 and 74, Benson shot consecutive rounds of 73 and Escamilla began the day with a 76 before tying his career-low with 70.
Duggan's 72 was his sixth round of par or better this year and the 17th of his career and Escamilla's 70 was his third round of par or better this year. Escamilla's 36-hole score of 146 was also a career-best.
Senior Grant Rogers and sophomore Rishi Kejriwal are tied for 91st place at nine-over par. Rogers posted rounds of 80 and 73 while Kejriwal had rounds of 77 and 76.
No. 43 TCU leads the team tournament at 36-under par, eight strokes in front of No. 10 Texas Tech. Texas Tech's Sandy Scott is in the individual lead at 15-under par, one stroke in front of TCU's David Ravetto.

"We just couldn't get it going out there today. There were a lot of missed opportunities. You can make a lot of birdies on this course so tomorrow we'll have an opportunity to make a move."

Play concludes tomorrow with the final round beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Rice will tee off from holes No. 16-18 and be paired with student-athletes from Southeastern Louisiana as well as a group of individuals.
