Rice Rolls Past Dartmouth
3/17/2019 3:29:00 PM | Women's Tennis
Owls improve to 8-6
The Lead: Anastasia Smirnova extended her winning streak to four matches by delivering the clinch point while Anna Bowtell and Linda Huang bounced back from first set losses to lead Rice to a 6-1 win over Dartmouth at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Sunday.
Doubles: Rice started fast on all three courts and grabbed the first point of the match with wins by Victoria Smirnova and Anna Bowtell (6-1 at the third line) and 53rd ranked Anastasia Smirnova and Priya Niezgoda (6-2 at the first line).
Singles: Niezgoda and the Smirnovas each raced to two-set wins to provide the Owls with the points to clinch the match. Anastasia Smirnova was pushed a tiebreak in her first set, but delivered the clinching point with a 6-2 win in the second set. Dartmouth took three first sets in singles, but Rice responded with second-set wins to send each match to a 10-point super set tiebreak. Huang took her match with a 10-6 score and Anna Bowtell wrapped up the day with a 14-12 win over Nina Paripovic.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "I thought we played a solid doubles point and came out pretty fast in singles. As any good team is going to do, Dartmouth showed some resistance and I think we lost our footing as a group at one point but were able to settle and regroup and find a way to get it done. I was proud of them for stepping up and responding when the other team showed some resistance".
Up Next: Rice hosts Johns Hopkins at 3 p.m. on Tuesday as the Owls and Blue Jays come together to celebrate the life of the late Ralph C. O'Connor, a graduate and supporter of JHU and an ardent supporter of Rice University and Rice Athletics. A reception will held after the match at the GRBTC.
