Owls and Blue Jays Honor Ralph O'Connor
The Lead: Rice defeated Johns Hopkins 7-0 on Tuesday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center in a match that served as the centerpiece of a day celebrating the life of longtime Rice benefactor Ralph S. O'Connor. Members of both teams joined with administrators from both schools, former letterwinners and fans in recognition of O'Connor's lifetime of support to both universities.
Doubles: Rice grabbed the doubles point by taking decisions on all three courts. Priya Niezgoda and Anastasia Simirnova, who were ranked 53rd in the new Oracle ITA computer rankings released earlier on Tuesday, race to a 6-0 win at the first line. The Owls remaining doubles teams finished their matches simultaneously with Diae El Jardi and Linda Haung winning just ahead of Anna Bowtell and Victoria Smirnova.
Singles: Anastasia Smirnova won her fifth consecutive singles match to lead a sweep for the Owls who improved to 9-2 at home.
Up Next: Rice hits the road this weekend to face 49th Princeton on Friday and William and Mary on Saturday. The Owls will return to GRBTC April 5 for the first of two matches to wrap up the 2019 home schedule when they host USF at 1 p.m.
